Maikel is a Hoorn-born defender who signed for Vitesse on a free transfer from PEC Zwolle this summer. Having started out at FC Volendam in the Jupiler League, a host of consistent performances saw him earn a £140k move east to Zwolle in 2013.

After featuring 77 times for the Eredivisie side and even chipping in with eight goals, Van der Werff decided that this summer, after two years, would be the one where he continued his journey east across Holland, with the centre-back eventually residing in Arnhem, becoming Vitesse’s third acquisition of the window.

Upon starting impressing during the early stages of pre-season, Maikel continued to make a good initial impression amongst Vitesse supporters when he scored the only goal of the game in a friendly against Turkish side Rizespor. His versatile, professional nature allowed him to form a quick, useful partnership with club captain Guram Kashia at the heart of defence.

After appearing for 71 minutes in the Europa League second leg defeat to Southampton, the defender was taken off due to injury and hasn’t played for the first team since. Maikel has however, been easing himself back into action, after a host of recent appearances for the reserves and was back on the bench in the defeat to Utrecht on 13th September 2015.
